Bloodhound supersonic car could reach 1,000mph
Bloodhound supersonic car faster than speeding bullet
RAF pilot Andy Green made history in 1997 when he drove the Thrust SSC jet-powered vehicle at 763mph (1,228km/h).
Now he intends to get behind the wheel of a car that is capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h).
Known as Bloodhound, the new car will be powered by a rocket bolted to a Typhoon-Eurofighter jet engine.
The team-members have been working on the concept for the past 18 months and expect to be ready to make their new record attempt in 2011.
Bloodhound project leader Richard Noble told BBC News: "This is one of the most exciting things you can do on God's Earth; and when you've the opportunity to do it really, really well, with the latest technology, you can't resist the challenge."
Faster than a bullet
The initial studies have illustrated just how grand a challenge it will be.
The 12.8m-long, 6.4-tonne Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car) will be expected to travel faster than a bullet fired from a handgun.
Its 900mm-diameter wheels will spin so fast they will have to be made from a high-grade titanium to prevent them from flying apart.
The car will accelerate from 0-1,050mph (1,690km/h) in just 40 seconds; and at its maximum velocity, the pressure of air bearing down on its carbon fibre and titanium bodywork will exceed 12 tonnes per square metre.

T-Mobile's Android-based G1 goes on sale
The first cell-phone based on Google Inc.'s Android platform went on sale Tuesday evening in San Francisco ahead of the start of sales across the U.S. today.
T-Mobile USA began offering the G1, made by Taiwan's High-Tech Computer (HTC), at its store on the city's Market Street at 6 p.m. The launch attracted a queue of about 150 people and was headed by Christopher Laddish, a student who had been waiting since 8 a.m. to buy the phone.
"I was sold on it without even having to pick it up," said Laddish, who was wearing a T-shirt given to him by T-Mobile that read "I was the first to get it." He said his current plan with Verizon Wireless was up for renewal on Tuesday and after shopping around he settled on the G1 because he liked products from both Google and HTC.
After a brief countdown as the clock approached 6 p.m. customers were allowed into the store to buy the phone. A few minutes later Laddish, with a large smile on his face, was surrounded by photographers and TV cameras who were there to document the start of sales.
The G1 costs $180 with a two-year service agreement and mail-in rebate. The phone without a service plan costs $400.
It has a 3.2-inch touchscreen display that slides away from the main body of the phone to expose a QWERTY keyboard. That puts it into competition with other smart phones like the Blackberry and Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone.
"I've been reading a lot about the phone for the last couple of weeks and I'm not really a big fan of the iPhone touch screen," said Chijioke Amah, who was also queuing up to buy the G1. "That's probably what made me not that interested in the iPhone. When I heard T-Mobile was going to have the Google phone with a keyboard, that's what got my attention."
Amah, who confessed to being a Mac user, said he isn't sold on the idea of typing on a touch screen and so decided the G1 would be a better choice than the iPhone as he switches from his current Blackberry.

This innovative product, which incorporates display, headphones, mobile A/V player, Wi-Fi capability, high-capacity memory, and power source in a single compact unit is the first of its type. The UP allows users to easily enjoy high-quality images, videos, and music anywhere. Two UP models will be available—the high-performance UP300x and the basic UP300. The Media Port UP will be available only in Japan through the Nikon Imaging Japan Inc. (Takao Nishioka, President) online UP Store (http://www.upstore.jp/).
Major Functions as follows...

Nokia Tube Xpress 5800 Launched + Video
The ink's not dry on your Nokia N96 contract yet, but the Finnish favourite has thrown another hellacious handset into the mix. Its first ever touchscreen offering!
As expected, Nokia has officially announced the 5800 Express Music phone we've come to know as the Tube.
Hot details include a 3.2" full touchscreen it's calling "the best mobile screen of all time."
Interestingly there's four differing input methods to suit all the horses and all the courses. A full-screen qwerty keyboard, handwriting recognition, a traditional phone keypad on the screen and a plectrum (it is a music phone, after all).
There's a 3.2-megapixel dual flash camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and 8GB of storage for your music that Nokia hopes you'll be picking up from the new Comes With Music service. They've also packed in some pretty powerful speakers too and we'll have more on that once we've had a hands-on.
One of the key innovations allows you to store your four favourite contacts, complete with photos, on the home screen storing your entire history with that person. Messages, emails and calls exchanged as well as Facebook status updates through the RSS feed. Neato.
Speaking of the internet, the 5800 is fully compatible with Flash meaning you'll be able to browse "the whole internet". A not-so-sly dig at its biggest rival, the iPhone.
Perhaps the biggest positive is the price. You'll be able to grab this phone now for just 279 Euros on pay-as-you-go. About half the price of the iPhone. Sweet.
Specifications include:
- Quad-band GSM with different versions supporting UMTS/HSDPA in various regions of the world
- 3.2 inch, nHD 640×360 resolution touch screen display
- 802.11 b/g WiFi
- Integrated GPS receiver
- Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support
- MicroUSB connector
- Stereo speakers
- 3.5mm headset jack
- 81MB internal memory with a microSD memory card slot (8GB card in the box)
- 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss and dual-LED flash
- 1320 mAh battery
- Size:111×51.7×15.5 mm (4.37×2.04×0.61 inches)
- Weight: 109g (3.84 ounces)
- Talk time:Up to 9 hrs (WCDMA), 5 hours (GSM)
- Stand-by time:Up to 17 days (GSM/WCDMA)

AC Cobra 212 S/C Sports Car 3506 cc V8 Twin Turbo (Lotus) Engine
The AC Cobra 212 S/C used the ultra low weight of the advanced Formula One carbon fibre body technology pioneered on the AC Cobra MKIV CRS. High performance Avon tyres have been selected to create a special road/race package for the AC Cobra 212 S/C to ensure that the output of the Lotus V8 reaches the road.Powering the AC 212 S/C is a 350 bhp Lotus engineered 3.5 Litre, V8, Twin Turbo engine mated to a 6 speed gearbox all hidden under a carbon fiber body.
John Owen says,"With the AC 212 S/C we've been able to bring together three tremendous assets in the same package".
AC Car Group Limited's Chief Engineer and the man who earlier led the Lotus design team which conceived the V8 unit. "We've got the ultimate sports car looks of the iconic AC Cobra. We've developed the pioneering F1 carbon fibre technology from the CRS. And we've mated all of this to one of the most powerful engines available today - the Lotus V8."
The car develops 350 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. It drives through a Tremec T56 six-speed manual gearbox and BTR Hydratrak final drive (ratio 3.73:1) to the rear axle. Power steering is standard together with AP Racing dual circuit servo-assisted ventilated discs all round. The specifications of the AC Cobra 212 S/C model reflects the power of the 3.5 litre Lotus engine with twin Garratt turbochargers.
"The AC Cobra 212 S/C is a hugely valuable addition to our line up of models which so proudly display their AC Cobra pedigree", said Mike Hall, AC Car Group Limited's Joint Chairman. "
