McCullum stars as Kochi beat Chennai

Kochi Tuskers Kerala claimed a seven-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League encounter in Kochi.

- 0

Brendon McCullum's 33-ball 47 helped Kochi chase down a revised victory target of 135 in the rain-hit game, which was reduced to 17 overs a side.

Earlier, Suresh Raina scored a brisk half-century to help Chennai to 131 for four, a total which eventually proved insufficient against the new IPL entrants.

Champions League - Team of the Week: Giggs tears Chelsea apart

Ryan Giggs heads our Champions League Team of the Week after yet again rolling back the years with a sublime performance against Chelsea.

- 0

The team has been selected based on the expert ratings given to players in our matchcasts.

Formation: 4-3-3

GK: Victor Valdes (Barcelona) - A rock in between the sticks for Barcelona at the Donbass Arena, Valdes repelled everything Shakhtar threw at him, including one wonder save to deny Henrik Mkhitaryan.

RB: Dani Alves (Barcelona) - As ever, the Barca right-back posed a continual threat down the flank, setting up Lionel Messi for the only goal of the game in one typical sortie forward.

CB: Benedikt Howedes (Schalke) - The big centre-back was imperious at the back as Schalke did what was expected of them at the Veltins Arena. Capped a solid performance with the German side's second goal to seal their progress into the semi-finals.

CB: Christoph Metzelder (Schalke) - Like Raul, he was washed up at Real Madrid but the strapping centre-half combined supreme intelligence with a quite fearsome mask as he made Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito look like children.

LB: Marcelo (Real Madrid) - Okay, he may have played in midfield against Tottenham, but with a slot to fill at left-back the Brazilian takes it for his assured performance on the left-hand side in Real's win at Tottenham.

RM: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) - Almost as inevitable as the boos which greeted his every touch at White Hart Lane was the way in which he dealt with the jeers - with a supreme performance, capped with the winning goal.

CM: Park Ji-sung (Manchester United) - Working hard is a national pastime in Korea and his endeavour is without question. But Park showed great awareness, touch and cool to control and finish Giggs's pass to seal the win. Loves the big games.

LM: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) - What can't Giggs do? Probably very little. What is without question is that he's just as good at 37 as he was at 27. Pulled the strings with boundless energy, and created both goals: that's all three assists over the two legs.

FW: Didier Drogba (Chelsea) - Why on earth did Carlo Ancelotti start with Fernando Torres, who is a broken man at the moment, when he has the ultimate alpha-male in Drogba? Made for this kind of match, immediately after coming on he gave United's defence a nightmare and scored a superb goal. Was a one-man show for Chelsea at times.

FW: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - The Argentine wizard was at his magical best against Shakhtar, running the show with his twinkle toes and giving the makeshift Ukrainian defence a real headache. Scored a beauty too.

FW: Raul (Schalke) - Like Giggs he shows no sign of ageing, and even displayed the pace over five yards that everyone thought he lost as he made Inter's defence look like a bunch of amateurs. Which, at the moment, they kind of are.

Manassero earns place in upcoming Majors

Seventeen-year-old Matteo Manassero's Malaysian Open win has catapulted him from 57th to 33rd in the world rankings, earning him a place at this year's US Open, Open and US PGA Championship.

- 0a

"I just missed out on Augusta (this month's Masters) but playing the other three majors will be fantastic," said the Italian teenager.

"I am really proud of that and the next target will be winning another tournament and keeping the momentum going. It's a great achievement after just 11 months of professional golf."

Manassero's victory in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday was his second on the European Tour.

He became the youngest winner on the circuit when he captured the Castello Masters title in Spain in October.

Manassero turns 18 on Tuesday and is planning to mark the occasion in style.

"I couldn't imagine anything better, going back home to celebrate my 18th birthday and my second victory," he said. "It's great to be able to celebrate both together.

"I never expected it at all to have one win before I was 18 and now I've got two."

Manassero said that as a young child he was inspired by the feats of fellow Italian Costantino Rocca, Tiger Woods and especially Seve Ballesteros.

"I grew up watching Costantino, Seve and Tiger," he said. "I thought Seve was the kind of player I wanted to be.

"The crowd was cheering for him and he was different to everyone else. He is a great person and a symbol of what a person should be.

"He sent me a letter after I won in Spain. That was nice."

While there was delight for Manassero in Malaysia, there was more anguish for Rory McIlroy the week after the 21-year-old Briton let slip a four-shot lead in the final round of the Masters.

"I am disappointed with the result but everything else was positive," said McIlroy after finishing third in Kuala Lumpur.

"I am proud at how I picked myself up from last week.

"Matteo is fantastic. He is a great talent, to get two wins on the tour before your 18th birthday is pretty special."

Championship - QPR held by Rams at Loftus Road

QPR and Derby remain within one result of promotion and survival respectively after battling to a 0-0 stalemate in the Championship at Loftus Road.

- 0Link

Highlights were few and far between throughout the 90 minutes, though Adel Taarabt wriggled away from the superb marking job of Robbie Savage long enough to force a fine save from Brad Jones with a classy long-range curler in the first half.

Danny Ward created the chance of the second 45 by racing past Bradley Orr and cutting back for Stephen Pearson to break the deadlock, but the brilliant reflexes of Paddy Kenny denied him.

And with both sides regarding a safe point as more important than gambling on three, the contest fizzled out to a fair result.

Though the visitors began confidently, it came as no surprise that the big chances in the opening period came QPR’s way.

A clever lifted ball into the area by Alejandro Faurlin allowed Wayne Routledge to fire towards goal from a tight angle on the right, and Heidar Helguson was inches away from converting with his head as it flashed across the goalmouth.

Tommy Smith came close to netting his 100th career goal, against his former club no less, on the quarter hour mark but could only guide his header just over the crossbar.

And on 17 minutes, Taarabt almost capped his recent crowning as Championship player of the year in fitting style with an audacious curling 25-yarder which Jones had to tip over at full stretch.

It was the peak of the Moroccan playmaker’s performance, as the wily veteran Savage continued to closely mark and frustrate Taarabt, getting the better of the majority of their exchanges and leaving the former Spurs man visibly frustrated.

It took 63 minutes for Nigel Clough’s men to seriously threaten, and Ward did well to skin the impressive right-back Orr and find himself in acres of space to pick out Pearson in the penalty area.

The Scotsman’s first-time shot looked unstoppable, but Kenny lifted an arm at full stretch to deny the visitors.

Five minutes later, Routledge twisted and turned before crossing to the far post where Smith once again looked to net his landmark goal, but brave defending from John Brayford prevented him the space to get a good head on it.

Brayford went from hero to villain on 76 when he was kept from stopping a goal kick by the strength and timing of Kaspars Gorkss, who was shoved headfirst into a nearby camera by the right-back.

The reaction earned Brayford a yellow card, one of four picked up by the Rams on the night.

But it appeared to be a worthwhile price to pay en route to collecting a point away from home against the top side in the division.

 Danica Patrick

Two years ago we introduced you to Danica Patrick, at the time a rookie Indy car driver who was a serious threat to win The Indianapolis 500. We'll it's Indy weekend again (The Indy 500 airs Sunday, May 27 on ABC), and Danica is still a serious threat to win, but at this point in her career she's a bit more Kournikova than Sharapova - as she's never won an Indy race. She's teased us with her good looks and racing ability, but she really needs to win a race to hit it big, and if she really wants to be an icon a jump to NASCAR wouldn't hurt.
This year Danica is not the only female driver at Indy. She's joined in the field of 33 bySarah Fisher and current "it girl" Milka Duno. Duno, doesn't hold a candle to Patrick...
Danica's previous work in front of the camera, where she's already a champion, is featured below (pictures are work safe, if a bit racey)..
